ABOUT

About the festival

Dai no Saka is a bon dance of Horinouchi in Uonuma, Niigata. Also called the nenbutsu dance, it is performed in memory of ancestors. Tradition says it was brought to this post town on the Mikuni Kaido road by chijimi cloth merchants who traveled to and from the Kamigata (Kyoto-Osaka) region. Two groups of lead singers trade verses slowly to the beat of a drum on a tower built in the grounds of Hachimangu Shrine.

  • A dance tower about 6 m tall built of logs, with a hexagonal lantern

  • Call-and-response singing, with each verse taking over two minutes

  • Drop-in dancers are welcome, and any clothing is fine, not just yukata
