ABOUT

About the festival

This is one of the kanko odori dances common in Mie Prefecture, offered at the autumn festival of Katte Shrine in Yabata, Iga City. It centers on naka-odori dancers wearing barrel drums (kanko) on their chests, joined by singers, bass drummers and others, for a total of more than twenty performers. Sections with song alternate with sections played on drums alone, giving it complex melodies and rhythms.

  • The ochizui worn on the naka-odori dancers' backs, with flower decorations of thin bamboo hanging down

  • A program of five pieces, including Shukuire and Omiya Odori

  • Complex movements by the drummers, such as twirling their drumsticks
