ABOUT

About the festival

This furyu dance is handed down in Kuta, a mountain village at the northernmost tip of Kyoto City. Dancers hold lit lanterns called hanagasa, decorated with artificial flowers, and dance to a shimedaiko drum and song. They visit Kaminomiya Shrine, Okawa Shrine and Shikobuchi Shrine at night, recalling the lantern dances popular in Kyoto in the 16th century.

  • Finely made artificial chrysanthemums and peonies of paper and the pith of kibushi stems

  • The upper and lower groups divide the pieces between them and swap each year

  • The shift from bon dancing to the hanagasa dance at Shikobuchi Shrine
