ABOUT

About the festival

This dance is handed down in the Ogochi area of Okutama, Tokyo, and is offered at the annual festival of Ogochi Shrine. It descends from the furyu kouta dances of the early modern period and is said to keep traces of early kabuki dance. The original village of Ogochi was submerged when a dam was built, and the relocated residents formed a preservation society to carry it on.

  • All the dancers are young men dressed as women

  • Sanbaso, traditionally performed first in the program

  • Kouta dances accompanied by flute and drum
