About the festival
This heron dance is performed at the festival of Yasaka Shrine in Tsuwano, following the mikoshi procession and danced at set places around the town. It is said to have come from Kyoto's Gion festival via Yamaguchi in the Muromachi period, and was brought again from Kyoto in the early Edo period. It preserves an old form so well that around 1955 it served as the model for reviving the heron dance at Kyoto's Gion Festival.
A male and female heron spreading their white wings as they dance face to face
An old-style song that begins "The bird that landed on the bridge"
A procession in which stick wielders, kakko drummers and others walk in pairs
