ABOUT

About the festival

This event is handed down in Ayado, in the Asuke area of Toyota, Aichi. It combines a night nenbutsu chanted to the sound of bells with a bon dance performed without instruments. A procession led by kiriko lanterns chants the nenbutsu as it moves from the approach of Heishoji temple into the grounds. Afterward, people form a ring around the lanterns and dance about ten pieces to the rhythm of their geta sandals.

  • The night nenbutsu procession, with kiriko lanterns painted with scenes of paradise and hell

  • A bon dance with no accompaniment, keeping time with geta stepping on sandy ground

  • Visitors are asked not to use flash photography at the site
