ABOUT

About the festival

At the festival of Chiryu Shrine, five floats are brought out in the main festival held every other year. On four of them, three-person ningyo joruri puppet theater (dashi bunraku) is performed, and on one, a karakuri puppet play operated by strings. Bunraku performed on floats is rare anywhere in Japan, and records of performances survive from the mid-Edo period.

  • Three-person ningyo joruri performed on the float stage

  • A string-operated karakuri puppet play set to joruri narration

  • Five floats lined up in the grounds of Chiryu Shrine
