About the festival
Jangara is a nenbutsu dance handed down in nine districts of Hirado City, offered by each district during the Obon season in memory of ancestors and to pray for abundant harvests. The name is said to come from the sounds of the gong ("jan") and the drum ("gwara"). Central naka-odori dancers in sedge hats decorated with paper flowers beat shimedaiko drums on their chests, surrounded by side drummers who accompany them.
