ABOUT

About the festival

This drum dance is offered every year by three districts, Komoya, Nobara and Kawanobori, at the annual grand festival of Nobara Hachimangu in Arao City. Two children wearing hats made to look like lion heads play a small drum and a large drum, dancing as they strike them to flute and song. The children purify themselves in a river early on the morning of the festival before they perform.

  • Hats with fans representing the lion's mouth, newly made each year by each district

  • Drumsticks swirled in circles across the drumheads

  • A slow dance in which the pair cross places and hop on one foot
