ABOUT

About the festival

This event is held with the Gion festivals of three shrines in Hita City: Kuma Yasaka Shrine, Wakamiya Shrine, and Yasakasha. Yamahoko floats with multi-tiered doll decorations, rebuilt every year, are pulled through the Mameda, Kuma, and Takeda districts. Nine yamahoko take part, in a distinctive style that could be called the Hita type.

  • Tall yamahoko with dolls displayed in many tiers

  • Banyama, the night procession of lantern-decorated yamahoko

  • Shudan Kaomise, when all nine yamahoko gather in front of Hita Station
