ABOUT

About the festival

Kannogaku is a gakuuchi drum dance offered every other year at the shinkosai procession festival of Otomi Shrine in Shiromaru, Buzen City. It prays for good harvests and rain, and its name is said to mean that by playing the drums, people resonate with heaven and earth and convey their wishes. Six naka-gaku drummers with barrel drums on their chests form a ring and beat the drums with dynamic movements.

  • The yomitate, in which a boy in an eboshi hat reads out the origins of the dance

  • The naka-gaku drummers' costume of shaguma headdresses and straw waist skirts

  • On the second day, offerings are made at ten shrines around the district
