ABOUT

About the festival

This event takes place during the spring festival of Nagahama Hachiman Shrine. Tradition says it began when Toyotomi Hideyoshi, then lord of Nagahama Castle, gave money to the townspeople, who used it to build hikiyama floats. Of the twelve floats with stages, four take part each year, and boys perform children's kabuki on the floats.

  • Children's kabuki performed by boys on the float stages

  • Kujitori, the Shinto lot-drawing rite that decides the order of performances

  • Floats built with an extendable section for a hanamichi walkway
