ABOUT

About the festival

This bon dance of Niino, in Anan, Nagano, uses no shamisen or drums. It moves only to the voices of the lead singers and the dancers' sung replies. A singers' platform is set up on a street lined with shops, and the dancing goes on all night. On the final morning, kiriko lanterns are carried to the edge of the district and burned to send off the dance god.

  • Seven dances, including Sukuisa, Takai Yama and Noto

  • A long ring of dancers stretching along the street around the singers' platform

  • The sending-off of the dance god, after which no one may look back on the way home
