ABOUT

About the festival

Jindai Odori is a large-scale furyu dance offered at the summer festival of Tenman Shrine in Zentoku, Nishiiyayama, Miyoshi City. It was once also called Taiko Odori or Kasa Odori, and is said to have been a performance praying for rain. At the signal of a yamabushi's conch shell, stick wielders, a lion, naginata bearers, dancers and others form a ring and begin to dance; at the end, again at the signal of the conch, they leave dancing.

  • Drumming patterns and fan movements said to number twelve kinds

  • About twelve pieces, including Kore no Oniwa, Hana Odori and Oharagi

  • A performance that begins and ends with the conch shell
