ABOUT

About the festival

These dances are offered in the worship hall of Kameoka Hachiman Shrine in Ama-kamimachi, Minamiawaji, during its autumn grand festival. They are said to have begun as thanks for answered prayers for rain, and are also called Hyakkoku Odori. Two kinds of dance that took shape at different times are handed down: the slow Oodori and the lively Koodori.

  • Oodori, with children dancing mae-odori in front and adults with large fans dancing naka-odori

  • Lively Koodori, with costumes and props changing for each piece

  • Song lyrics resembling kouta songs of the late Muromachi to early Edo periods survive
