ABOUT

About the festival

This furyu dance is performed at Obon by three districts of Totsukawa Village at the southern tip of Nara Prefecture: Ohara, Musashi and Nishikawa. Men beating drums with tasseled drumsticks, women with fans and people holding bamboo poles hung with kiriko lanterns dance together in places such as school grounds. It is also said to have been handed down by monks and believers who made pilgrimages around the sacred Mount Tamaki.

  • Drumming with drumsticks trailing long, colorful tassels

  • Lantern bearers holding bamboo poles hung with kiriko lanterns

  • Formations and sequences that differ from district to district
