ABOUT

About the festival

This nenbutsu dance is offered at Takinomiya Shrine and Takinomiya Tenmangu in Ayagawa Town. Tradition holds that it began when people danced for joy after the rain prayers of Sugawara no Michizane, then governor of Sanuki Province, were answered. The dance centers on the gechi, who holds a large fan, and moves to gongs, drums, conch shells and other instruments and the chanting of the nenbutsu.

  • Dancing centered on the gechi role, who brandishes a large fan

  • Eleven groups in the town take turns, and in the fifth year all groups dance together

  • Rounds of about 15 minutes each, offered repeatedly at both shrines
