About the festival
This festival is said to have begun in 1756 on the orders of the lord of the Shinjo domain, to encourage people worn out by the previous year's famine. Floats from each neighborhood follow the mikoshi (portable shrine) of Tenman Shrine through the city. The floats are decorated with figures based on kabuki and stories, and are rebuilt every year by the neighborhood's young people.
