About the festival
This bon dance is handed down in Nishimonai, in the town of Ugo, Akita. On Honmachi Street, lit by bonfires, the ondo is danced early in the evening and the jinku later at night. The jinku is also called the dance of the dead. Together with hoods that represent the dead, it keeps the character of a memorial dance performed alongside the returning spirits at Obon.
Patchwork hanui kimono sewn from scraps of cloth, and hikosa hoods or woven straw hats that hide the face
Flute, drums, shamisen, tsuzumi and bells played on a specially built stage
Paid seating is available; without a ticket, viewing is standing room between the seats
