ABOUT

About the festival

This performing art comes from the Minasegawa area of Yamakita, Kanagawa, and is thought to have grown out of Shugendo mountain-ascetic rites. Its origin is unclear, but a reliable record dates from 1863. Men take roles such as tengu, lion and yamabushi, and the procession and dances are presented at performances held once every several years.

  • A large production with about 80 men in many different roles

  • The shugyo dance, which recalls the training of mountain ascetics

  • Mando lanterns waved in unison along the procession route
