About the festival
Gujo Odori is a bon dance held in the streets of Hachiman, Gujo, Gifu, at venues that change from night to night. Tradition says it began in the Kan'ei era of the Edo period, when the lord of the castle encouraged it to promote harmony among samurai, farmers, artisans and merchants. Dancers perform ten pieces, such as Kawasaki and Harukoma, to music played from a yakata float. Visitors can join the rings of dancers alongside local people.
Anyone can join; yukata and geta sandals are recommended
The sound of stamping geta is one of the dance's features
Dancers who pass an evaluation receive a certificate
