ABOUT

About the festival

This furyu drum dance of Kanomizu, in the Meiho area of Gujo, Gifu, is offered at the annual festival of Kanomizu Hakusan Shrine, the local guardian shrine. It is said to have been handed down for about 300 years, and the whole community takes part, from preparation to the festival day itself. Costumed dancers form a large ring around the drummers, who carry flower-decked shinai on their backs.

  • Four drummers carrying shinai, flower decorations about 3.6 m long

  • Lead and chorus singers alternating the same verses

  • Dances performed at three places: in front of the nakageta, in the oniwa grounds and in front of the hall of worship
