About the festival
This kouta dance is handed down in the Honson and Wakago districts of Niijima, Tokyo, and is danced in temple grounds at Obon. Wakago was founded in 1711 by settlers from Honson, and each district keeps a slightly different form. Many of the songs are love songs in the style of Muromachi-period kouta, and apart from a drum struck at the end of each piece, the dancing is accompanied by singing alone. Male dancers hold fans, except in the Ise Odori, a hand dance.
Hats with cloth hanging from the brim (purple in Honson, red in Wakago) worn with crested kimono
The kasaboroku and kama, set up during the dance as charms against evil
Three pieces in Honson and four in Wakago, both ending with the Ise dance
